Abby's Skirt

Last summer, my sisters-in-law thought it would be fun to make skirts for our girls. So, we all went over to Wal-mart and bought fabric, needles, thread, ribbon, patterns, the works. Now, those of you who know anything about me, know, I don't sew. I have a travel sewing kit...somewhere. I haven't the foggiest clue when it comes to sewing. So, last summer, when Cindy and Janus were working their hearts out on skirts, I was sort of watching and then dodging them when they asked if I was ready to do mine. Well, I along with my "hankerin'" (see previous blog "A Man and His Legos", for a definition of hankerin), along with my hankerin to learn how to cook new things, I also have been wanting to learn some sewing. I especially got this bug when I was trying to decide what the kids were going to wear for Halloween. I really dislike store bought costumes. Anyway...I asked who around here in Newport was willing to show me some sewing skills. Well, Maryann Kohl was the first one everyone said to go to. So, I asked Maryann if she would be willing to give me "private lessons" in sewing. She agreed!

Again, Abby and I went down to Wal-mart and bought some more fabric, and all the bells and whistles. I was getting really excited. Maryann came over and brought her sewing machine and we got right to work. Well, I quickly became aware of how much I don't know. She started instructing me and I said, HUH? I was in the dark and felt like I was reading chinese on this pattern I had. It's a whole new language for sure.

Well, 3 hours later, with Maryann doing most of the work...I watched very intently and asked about a million questions...we had 1 skirt and 1 matching headband. Whew! I can't believe everything there is to learn about sewing! But, I'm happy to say, I'm still excited and want to continue to learn and be able to do the next skirt all by myself! Abby loved the skirt and she wore it for Easter Sunday.

Very cute! I still have all of my fabric still sitting here, too. It seems kind of easy when someone is sitting there helping you, but then much harder when you do it on your own!!! The Armed Forces YMCA has excellent, cheap sewing classes on Sat. mornings where you just go sew with a group of others and an instructor. If I were there now, I would join. I guess the more opportunity you have to use the skill, the better you get!

Very cute - isn't Mary Ann great!!?! I was supposed to sew a dress with her but I kept putting it off and putting it off because I wanted to lose weight first.

Way to go, Sheila!! You're on your way to becoming a sewing goddess. Hee!! Hee!!

That is one excellent looking skirt. Get ready, because if Abby is anything like Alexis, she will want you to make more and more stuff for her. Not only skirts, but clothes for her barbies and dolly's (if Abby is into that sort of stuff)etc, etc, etc.
