Last Wednesday, we had a fun day with friends for my birthday. It was just a nice day out with the kids and some of my friends. We went to a Butterfly Zoo in Tiverton. It was kind of fun, you go in to this greenhouse basically and just let the butterflies fly all around you and land on you. The kids thought it was cool, but very hot and humid, so it lasted for about 30 minutes. Then we went to a park with sub sandwiches. Then we all wanted to cool off and decided on Slurpies from 7-11, yummy! :) One friend that was with me said she wanted to give me something for my birthday and asked if I had ever had my eyebrows waxed. Ha Ha, i know weird question, but she's a hairstylist and does facials, too, and we had talked about it before. So, I don't have bushy eyebrows, but I've never plucked or anything, but I thought it would be fun, so we did some waxing! Ouch!!! I like the new brows, though. Then later we had cake at home and went to dinner at the Blue Plate Diner on West Main St, in Middletown. All in all a fun day.
So, I mentioned in my last post about starting college again, some of you have asked about that, thanks for asking! I'm really excited but also a little nervous, I haven't been in school in 9 years! I was a music education major at USU when David and I decided to leave school to join the Navy. Well, 9 years and 3 kids later and it just hasn't been a priority. In November, I started feeling the desire and thought it was just one of those fleeting things, but it has very much stayed with me and now feels kind of like a need for me. I don't know if it's just for my brain to keep working and not living on Cheerios, or if there will be a need in the future for me to have a source of income, or what, but right now, I don't care about any of that. I'm just proud of myself for following through with it all and getting registered, etc.
I've decided to go to the University of Phoenix. Mainly because they have degree programs that are entirely online. While I'm excited about school, my husband, kids and home are my top priorities, so on campus is not an option. So, the Uof Phx is very military oriented and have given me a lot of help to get started. I have a lot of credits from USU, so hopefully, I'll have an associates degree in Business within about 9 months or so. From there, I'm planning to start the Bachelors program in Communicative Disorders /or Psychology. After that, I plan to do the Masters Program in Counseling/Marriage and Family Therapy. Writing it down, I can see it sounds pretty lofty, but I'm praying everything will continue smoothly and I'll be able to finish my goals.

Sheila,
If you are going after psychology/counseling -- I think you should specialize in helping thsoe with obsessive compulsive disorder. There is such an incredible need for specialty counselors, especially for children/adolescents. Think about it!
I have thought about that and I just hope it's an available specialty when I get to that point! I'll keep you posted.
You would not get that through a Univeristy. The way you do it is to get your degree and then you have to get trained specifically on your own through the OCD Foundation. The reason is because you need to know two types of therapy ... cognitive behavioral as well as erp (exposure and ritual prevention). This is the key ... providing the erp therapy. You may want to get out the library any books from Tamar Chanky, such as "Freeing Your Child from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder". She is the director of the National Center of Childhood Anxiety (including ocd) in Philadelphia. People travel for hundreds of miles each week just to find a qualified counselor for their children. And did you know that almost 25% of our population suffers from at least a degree of obsessive compulsive disorder?
Sheila,
I just have to say that I'm proud of you for going back to school. Good luck with everything, and BTW, I'm so sorry that I missed your birthday. I was totall thinking of you. We had some family in town and it just completly slipped my mind, but you were on my mind, sista.

Good for you Sheila. I have been trying to convince Jeremy to let me go back to school too but he is against it, maybe you will pave the way for him to open up his mind! It sounds like you are going to be busy, I hope that it goes well and that having 2 kids in school will give you some more time! I will be excited to tune in for more updates!!!
you go girl!
Sheila, I also so proud of you for going back to school! You are a wonder woman!

Hey, Happy Birthday, and good luck with school. I think I would find it hard to study with the kids. BTW--I'm very jealous of your trip to NYC--looks like you had a great time. Man, I miss that place!

This is the type of training you want to attend and Dr. Aureen Wagner is about the best in the field for at least children/adolescents. I know you are not ready for this yet, but depending on what you complete while in RI, this would be an AMAZING training week!
No, I take that back. This would probably be better.
